While being interviewed at the recent BIA/Kelsey Conference, I asserted that “the consumer is at the center of the value creation universe.” This shouldn’t be controversial. But it is. To understand why this is so requires that we think back to the genesis of the YP marketplace. The yellow pages companies were spun off from large phone companies. Dex. Supermedia. And more. They were, back in the day, the first form of consumer search. And the model was simple. A yellow pages company gave consumers a book. Free. And the book was valuable. It was really the only effective way to find many of the things you might be looking for: plumbers, dentists, restaurants, party stores, and more.Consumers used the book. And the book drove consumer attention to particular merchants – those who had placed ads. And often, the merchants who placed bigger ads got more consumer attention and more consumer-driven revenue. That was the state of the YP world in the early 90s, when the Internet and the Web began to enter the consumer’s consciousness. And in just ten years, the yellow pages industry was in a fight it never anticipated, a fight it was ill-prepared for, a fight [...]

This is my first post as the CEO of Local Matters. By way of orientation, I’m going to introduce myself and lay out some of the terrain that I expect to explore in the weeks and months ahead. Comments are welcome and encouraged! For those who don’t know me, I come from the Internet and startup world. I have founded and run a half dozen companies and worked with some of the most remarkable and talented people. A co-founder and CTO at Service Metrics, Niel Robertson, is now CEO at Trada. The other co-founder of Service Metrics, who introduced me to Niel, Rajat Bhargava, was also co-founder with me of StillSecure, which he runs today as its CEO. And the person who helped make all this happen by his friendship and introductions was Brad Feld, who has since become one of the most prolific (Feld Thoughts), influential and successful venture capitalists (Foundry Group) and supporters of entrepreneurs and early stage startups (TechStars). I have had the honor and satisfaction of serving as mentor to dozens of entrepreneurs over the past ten years, most recently as part of TechStars, an accelerator started by David Cohen and Brad Feld. And I watched – and participated [...]
